NEW BROCHURE HIGHLIGHTS FARMS, FOOD AND FUN ON NYS ROUTES 5 & 20
June 20, 2007
The members of the Routes 5 & 20 Promotion Group are gearing up to put the spotlight on agriculture along a 135 mile stretch of historic highway, between Lafayette on the east and Batavia and Darien on the west. With the help of a grant from the New York State Ag and Markets Department, six tourism promotion agencies have collaborated to produce a four-color brochure and a special section on the Routes 5 & 20 website (www.routes5and20.com) designed to introduce visitors to the rich agricultural resources of the region.
"Farming and tourism are key ingredients in the economy of New York and no where is that more evident than along the 135 mile stretch of Routes 5 and 20 between Lafayette and Darien, New York," stated Meg Vanek, Director of Cayuga County Office of Tourism. "Combining the attributes of agriculture and tourism into 'agri-tourism' is a natural fit for this part of New York State," Vanek added.
The Farms, Food and Fun on Routes 5 & 20! brochure and website feature information about farm and farmers' markets; where to pick your own strawberries or blueberries or cut your own Christmas tree; who has agricultural fairs; what restaurants use locally grown food or New York State wines and beers; what communities hold agricultural-themed festivals; and where to find wineries along the route or buy a locally produced delicacy.
"Agri-tourism has great appeal to both visitors and farmers," stated Valerie Knoblauch, Executive Director of Finger Lakes Visitors Connection of Canandaigua. "Farmers see it as an opportunity to deal directly with the consumer and the visitors like the idea of having a rural experience. We hope that this brochure and website will help bring these two groups together," Knoblauch added.
Members of the Routes 5 and 20 Promotion Group are the Skaneateles Chamber of Commerce, Cayuga County Office of Tourism, Seneca County Office of Tourism, Finger Lakes Visitors Connection (Ontario County), Livingston County Chamber of Commerce and Genesee County Chamber of Commerce.
