"135 MILES OF FARMS, FOOD AND FUN" KICK-OFF EVENTS PLANNED FOR JULY 12

June 25, 2007

The Routes 5 & 20 Tourism Promotion Group will officially launch its "135 Miles of Farms, Food and Fun" Campaign on July 12, with simultaneous Kick-Off Events being held in Auburn and Avon.

"This year the Routes 5 & 20 Tourism Promotion Group is putting the spotlight on the agri-tourism opportunities along a 135-mile stretch of this historic highway," stated Lisa Burns, Director of Tourism for the Livingston County Chamber of Commerce. "135 Miles of Farms, Food and Fun! is a collaborative effort of six tourism promotion agencies located between Skaneateles on the east and Batavia on the west. All together we have identified close to 200 places or events that offer a blend of agriculture and tourism, so you can see that there is plenty to do and see on Routes 5 & 20!," Burns concluded.

The Kick-Off Event in Auburn will be held at the Ward OHara Agricultural Museum on Route 38A in Emerson Park at 3:30 p.m. The Worm Farm (RT Solutions), located on Routes 5 & 20 in Avon, will be the site for the second Kick-Off Event, with activities getting underway at 4 p.m.

"We selected the Ward OHara Agricultural Museum and 'The Worm Farm' as sites for our Kick-Off Events, because we wanted to showcase the rich heritage of farming along Routes 5 & 20, while at the same time highlighting the present and future of agriculture along the route," stated Sue Dove, Director of Skaneateles Chamber of Commerce and member of the Routes 5 & 20 Tourism Promotion Group.

The Ward OHara Agricultural Museum tells the story of the life of farm families in upstate New York between 1850 and 1940. The museum is open 11 am to 4 pm daily from mid May through mid September. Annual special events provide unique opportunities to see antique farm equipment in operation. The Draft Horse & Hay Day, held the third Saturday in July, is always a great crowd pleaser. RT Solutions-The Worm Farm of Avon is definitely not your typical farm. It grows earthworms which in turn produce vermicompost, well-known for its ability to increase soil fertility!
